Sandcastle Building

It was like making up for lost time, for those of us who had never ever made sandcastles during our childhood days. It was hard work just to make a sandcastle of such a dimension. However, with teamwork it made the task easier.

The Good Old Days

Reliving the memory of my childhood days - leading a carefree and easy life. Wow! This building of sandcastle really needs skills, patience, confidence, creativity and passion - just like my life-long career of teaching. Putting that aside it was sheer pleasure and fun! I simply love it except for my breaking and aching back.

Sand.....fun.......wonderful.....joy.......

It's fun! It's great! Just like dreaming.......which i never think will have this wonderful day.
Especially, build the castle part which I was always fail to build previously.

Cheers!!!!!!!!!Is a very success event..Hope to have another journey like this.

Back to Childhood's Time - Playing With Sand

It seems to be years back since last playing with sand. It's really fun to build sand castle especially with colleagues who we might not work together often but it was not a big problem as everyone was enjoying and co-operative.

here come the hard work.....Sweating time....Part 1

First stage planning 2

everyone is a winner in jiemin school

The last time I was in ECP beach, that was about 20 years ago playing sand with my family.
And as with any Jiemin functions, people here make sure you enjoyed yourself with fun and food.
So, while we are enjoying ourselves we learnt something.
Each and everyone of us have our aspirations.
Parents wants their children to go to school to learn to be independent, productive, and practise the right values.
Students want to make friends, learn something interesting.
Teachers want to impart their ocean of knowledge to their students to prepare them to be able to lead a meaningful life.
Each of us are born with different abilities and aspirations.
And we know that the primary education have very great influences in shaping and moulding the habits and thinking of these young minds. Do most parents and students realised this?
I am not sure if I am being naive to suggest that our next game would be to make everyone in Jiemin a winner. A winner in his own ability and aspiration. For that we need to convince everybody in the school and in their homes, that is so.
We can organise a "learning journey". The whole school and all the students parents involved. The progam is to instill in the students, parents and all the school staff that we work together to fulfill our aspirations.
Everyone is a Winner in Jiemin Primary School

Sandcastle building

The Sandcastle event was an enriching one. Most of us worked on our sandcastles diligently, wanting to build the most beautiful one possible with our newly acquired skills.

The sandcastle changing point was difficult to stomach at first but after a while we learnt how to work with what was given and make the best of it. This brought the team closer as we worked together to create something good with the resources given and the now extremely limited time.

The final instruction to link all the groups work together adds the finishing touches to turning individual castles into a big wonderland. This taught me that if everyone worked together, the whole will always be a better picture then its parts in isolation.

Sandcastle building

I have never built a sandcastle in that magnitude before. However, I realised that nothing is impossible if I have the will to achieve it. Well, the task looked formidable at first but in the end, things could still be achieved with the application of the correct strategies. It was a mixture of boredom at first but turned into fun and excitement at last. I am glad that I had learnt something worthwhile.

Sandcastle - Teambuilding

I really had fun. Besides picking up some skills about sandcastle building, I also got to work with some colleagues whom I seldom work with -- Team 5. We were a very cooperative group. No quarrels, no arguments and we were task-oriented. However, I think we've learnt that because we were so cooperative and so task oriented, we lacked the creativity and we "just did it" without really bothering about what was happening around us. Thinking to myself, sometimes, we've got to stop a moment from what we're doing and take a look around us to see what's going on and whether we are moving in the right direction.

Sandcastle - Teambuilding

I did not imagine that our team could actually build a sandcastle within such a short period of time! The event has made me realise that anything can be made possible with teamwork, trust and harmony. I would like to thank all my team members and those involved in organising the event for making this a truly wonderful experience.

Sandcastle Building Reflection (Ai Chuin)

This was a fun and meaningful event. I have learnt a lot about the importance of teamwork, and having faith and patience from this activity.

Before the event, I had my doubts about building a sandcastle successfully. I was glad to have the guidance from the instructors and the cooperation from my team mates which made the sandcastle building possible.

The overcast morning on that day led me to think that the event would be cancelled. However, all of us persevered on despite the slight drizzle amidst the gusts of wind. We were finally rewarded with a clear sky and a nice rainbow at the end. =)

Sandcastle building requires patience especially when it comes to laying the foundation. If it is not done faithfully and properly from the start, it won't work and all our subsequent effort will be wasted.

This is the same for teaching. It is important for us to ensure that students are able to grasp fundamental concepts right from the beginning so that they will be more well-equipped to understand what we will be teaching them susequently.

In conclusion, I would really like to thank our SWC members for taking the time and effort to organise such a meaningful activity. Kudos to all of you who made this possible!!

=)

Takeaways from Sandcastle Teambuilding

A simple childlike activity that is made not so simple, with great lessons learnt! While I got my hands dirty and my feet wet, I immersed myself in a few hours of fun learning. Teamwork, perseverance, patience, ability to adapt to changes, stay positive, ... are some of my takeaways.

Adrienne

Sandcastle - Teambuilding

The activity was a great one. I had enjoyed the event. I had learnt a lot of things from this activity. It has helped me to understand that changes happen every now and then and we must be ready to adapt to the change.

I have learnt that and about teamwork in this event. Its a great event. We should have such events as it helps us to learn a lot of things. I enjoyed every single moment.

Sandcastle - Teambuilding

It was a great event. I had learnt a lot from this event. I had learnt how to work with people, to cope with changes. I had a loads of takeaway from this event.

I enjoyed the whole activity. I could not believe that we could build such nice sandcastle. No words could describe how I feel about the event.

Sandcastle - Teambuilding

It was a wonderful experiance. I had enjoyed it and learnt that anyone could create beautiful sandcastle. I learnt how to maximise my strengths. At the same time, I had learnt to work with others and had managed to complete the task within the given time.

Before the programme started, it was raining. After that, it was very cold there. I was wondering how to work in this weather but shortly the sun came over to visit us and stayed there with us giving us warmth and strength to move on.

Before I pen off, i can never forget the rainbow. Its a breath taking view. I simply loved the whole event and had learnt a lot from this programme.

It was great fun indeed building sandcastle in the not so hot sun! Most importantly I learned that all departments, no matter what their programmes are, will have to eventually unite for the benefit of the pupils and staff. Maybe we should call ourselves Jiemin United then !

Sandcastle Building

This is the first time I ever attempt such 'feat'. Considering the fact that we were given a short time to complete the task, I'd never thought that we would be able to have our mission accomplished. My team had such difficulty trying to get the four ft tower up at first but eventually we did figure sumthing out. Well, patience is truly a great virtue. Overall, I felt it was a unique experience thou i ended up with aches in the back n legs.

Building

The activity was fun and enjoyable. Such activities really help people of different backgrounds to bond together and accomplish something. As we are enjoying the activities, it also taught us the importance of communication and teamwork. I am definitely looking forward for such activities in the future.

Hopefully You Have Enjoyed It!

Initially when PohLin and I were planning for this event, I was not too sure if the staff would like it, as it involves lots of sweat and effort. However, after this I felt an enormous sense of achievement, not merely from organising this team-bonding activity but much more from the chance to work so closely and cohesively with my colleagues. Frankly, I was surprised to see Mdm Lee and Mdm Khatijah working even harder than me. I asked them if they needed a rest, hoping they would say 'yes' so I could get a short break together with them, but both gave me an immediate 'no thanks!' I was totally impressed. In fact, the entire Jiemin was so busy trying their utmost to make the best out of the sand, water and time given, what an awesome and inspiring sight to behold!

Lastly, I would like to thank my team for being extremely cooperative and fun to be with. This is truly a rewarding experience, I hope Jiemin shares my feeling.

Sandcastle Building

Build A Castle

Hi everyone! I used to wonder how sandcastles were fabulously crafted when I was young. I tried to do like what I saw, but ultimately, it's just a lump of sand. Upon attending the retreat organised by SWC, I realised that sand and water is like pupils and teacher. When building a sandcastle, I need not just sand, but also water. Pupils need teacher and a teacher needs her pupils. Apart from that, I can't get my castle ready and done nicely at the same time, without help from my team members. That goes the same for working in a school, I can't survive alone without my colleagues lending a helping hand. In conclusion, I hope that this new semester will bring about changes , which is inevitable, so that I can be a more effective teacher and worker. Happy working together, dear colleagues! :)

Castles Flying High!

Double rainbows and majestic sandcastles. A picture perfect sight. It was made possible with co-operation, perseverance, hardwork and gritty determination. Every individual's contributions played a significant role in the sandcastle building activity. We have made castles that are flying high! A memorable day for all to savor.

Enjoy the weekend!

Reflection on Sandcastle Building Activity

The activity was really fun. We got to work as a group and focussed on each other's strengths. Although the sandcastle building task seemed quite daunting at first, the group managed to work things out eventually. Through the activity, I learnt the importance of perseverance, that change was inevitable, and teamwork was crucial for the survival of the organization. When difficulties are encountered along the way, always remember that help is nearby.
Diana Chan

Sandcastles Can Fly

There are many things in life which are not within our control and this includes changes. Working in an industry where changes are abundant, we really must learn to accept changes readily and move on together with team members quickly.

This sandcastle building experience had summed up two important factors contributing to a successful organization, namely adaptability to changes and team-work. Hope all of us are able to exercise this at work....Cheers

Sandcastle Rap???

Yoh! Yoh! Here we are, all at the beach,
Meddling sandcastles within our reach.
Grab some sand and pour some water,
Clinch it hard and it won't tumble.
Build a castle and protect your kingdom,
In no time, you gotta switch for freedom. Cos,
Peace has set in, let's collaborate,
Adapt to changes and reach our target.

Sandcastle Building - Alfred Liu

The completing of the sandcastle in one hour seem impossible at the beginning as I never had any experience. However, as each individual come together to play their part, the sandcastle was up. It was a sense of achievement as the 'impossible' was done. An empowering experience.

Sandcastle Building

Hi everyone,

though i had experience in building sandcastle, however this was my first time building such a HUGE one! Through this experience, i felt that when there are changes, we need to learn to accept changes positively & take these changes as new challenges, so that we will be able to move on steadily....remember you are not alone, there is always people around you to help out if you need help.

A BIG thanks to SWC committee for organising such a GREAT event!

Sandcastle Teambuilding @ East Coast Park (20/6/08)

Ola everyone....

Hope that you had a great time during our Sandcastle Teambuilding activity at the East Coast Park.....

Now is the time for us to each reflect on our takeaway for this activity.....

Alright, let me get the ball rolling.....

I had a ball of time doing something that I long for...building sandcastles...of course under proper guidance of our instructors....

On top of the enjoyment in building them, I really appreciate the apportunity given in learning more abt each other's strength and my own weaknesses. Everyone was opened to suggestions and work towards the goal. I realised that one needs proper guidance and must not be shy to seek help from the expert or even our pupils whenever we encounter new challenges.

Well, despite the heat, I would say it was a gd job well done by the SWC.......hats off to you guys.......GR8 JOB PPL!

Cheers,

Racial and religious harmony

How racial and religious harmony can be fostered in schools?

Pupils of different races and religious groups interact not only in our neighbourhood but also at school. Therefore, it is significant that teachers encourage interaction among pupils of different races so that they can instil in them the values of tolerance and mutual respect for one another. One aspect of doing so is using the cooperative learning strategies which strongly bring pupils together to share and listen to one another. In this way, they also inculcate in them values that they should observe and practise.

Since Singapore is a cosmopolitan country, pupils can be made to realise the importance of a strong inter-cultural community through games they play in schools - promote traditional games so that they can play during their recesses. In this way, the school facilitates the learning of core values through games that they play.

Singapore: Past, Present and Future

NE news : Singapore - Past, Present and Future ( 5 - 11 Mar 2008)
With the influx of foreign talent into Singapore, the more we need to keep the talented and capable Singaporeans in Singapore. As teachers, this sense of loyalty needs to be inculcated since young, especially during their formative years in the primary schools. The pupils need to feel that Singapore is their Home, to have a sense of belonging and be able to show appreciation and gratitude for what the Government has done for our country and citizens. Without capable leaders, Singapore will not be able to achieve what we are today. This sense of belonging and patriotism can only be achieved if the pupils are made aware of the political stability that we are reaping now through the sheer hard work of our present leaders serving the country now.

NEws Weekly Edition 5-11 March

Hi,

Here's what the P3 teachers had come up with during our discussions :

1. Loyalty cannot be bought. The new citizens and PRs still have their roots in their own homeland. However, we can encourage and adopt dual citizenship.
2. Since they are from various foreign ethnic groups, introduce a public holiday called International Day. Let there be a selective incorporation and sharing of their cultures with others.

NE Weekly News

After reading the article posted here : S:\JPS Staff\Damodaran_Prabaharan\NE
- the P5 level trs reflectd the following :

It is vital for schools like SJI to have a pool of teachers of different races to guide the pupils in Racial Harmony. There should also be a fair mixture of students of different races in such schools. Mr Yeo, former SJI st, reflected on days gone by - SJI Lasallian culture or movement teaching leadership and Christianity which is used as a central values in any of their activities. We also reflected that it is impt to have a common Jiemin sch culture in our sch to make cultural integration natural here. Ms Mak agreed that our sch identity is vital here as well. Some trs shared their personal experiences of racial tensions created by our own st and the sharings were very insightful.....The cultural values of the st and the trs should not be only reflectd by our ethnic costumes worn during RHD, it should also be natural and sincere esp in our actions and decisions.....

Cyber Wellness - Case Study 3

1. If i'm Vincent, i'll informed an adult/ teacher/ cyber wellness coordinator/ FTSC and then notified the police. i'll also post a message on my blog to inform viewers that the photos and remarks made were untrue.

2. I will verify with him if its true because it is not right to jump to any conclusion without any investigation.

4 Players’ Model

The mock up was a fruitful session. Through the process, our group could see how the views of the mover and the opponent could be shared and questioned by the other party. The follower could see the ideas presented before deciding who to second.

In addition, ideas get discussed in depth as the opponent’s constant questioning will serve to get the mover to think in greater detail in order to give stronger views or cite more supporting examples to sway the follower to his side.

Cyberbullying Case Study 1

Diana has been receiving abusive SMSes from people she doesn't know. This will cause her to be paranoid, scared and confused. This might result in her being afraid to leave her house as she might be afraid that the SMSes might be a prelude to physical abuses from the unknown sender. This will in turn affect the other aspects of her life. Eg. Her social life and academic performance.

As Diana's friend, we will tell her not to delete the message as in the event that there is a need to inform the police, there will be evidence. We will then inform the teacher about the SMSes. The teacher can then take steps such as informing the school about the SMSes and how such 'pranks' will affect the victim. Hopefully this will be a wakeup call for the prankster.

If such SMSes continues, we will advise her to go to the police. But most importantly, we must assure her that there are people around her who care for her and she should not be afraid or affected by such messages.

Cyberwellness - Case Study of Samuel

Behaviours and symptoms to 'game addiction' were distinctive in Samuel's behaviours.Basically, he was living in virtual reality. He looked forward to his game to the extend that he ate dinner in a rush, gave excuses to his absent-mindedness, claimed he was sick, ignored his mother when questioned and hurried to the game store immediately after school.

Some of us felt that his father could have set the ground rules first before rewarding him with the game and teach him the discipline of having control over the game. Now, it seemed as though the game has taken control over Samuel.

Follower's Comments:

Mover--> stated the motion, gave rationale and cited examples.
Opposer --> asked questions to clarify and Mover elaborated.
Observer --> showed verbal recognition

We understand that it was just a mock-up, so the process was not realistic. The motion should be something authetic that comes from the heart of the mover. The mover must believe in the motion so that he/she could stand by it. During the mock-up practice, the opposer might not oppose to what the mover had said.

Reflections on Chapter 3

The writer's constant questionings in this chapter show that we cannot hope to have answers simply handed to us. Therefore, this chapter suggests that questions are more important than answers.
As teachers, we should encourage pupils to ask good questions so as to stimulate their thinking skills.
We should not always be feeding them with answers.

The Little Prince Chapter 2

Comments:

1) We see things in different perspectives. Everyone is different. Children see things in a different light compared to an adult.

Reflection on Little Prince Chapter 2

Miss Wong Jia Lei:
There's a need to refine one's teaching in order to reach the best standard. Just like how the author had to draw the sheep several times to meet the little prince's expectation.

Miss Mabelene Mak:
We have to think ahead, set long term goal and not just focus on the difficulties that our pupils are facing today.

Miss Ooi Guat Lan:
We should not be too judgmental and have to create a conducive environment for our pupils.

Mdm Tan Gek Hiang:
We have to give ourselves a chance to try out new things. We need to be wary of this self-fulfilling prophecy. You will never know the outcome until you try. Don’t make assumption.

Mrs Grace Tan:
Encouragement is needed for both adult and children. Encouragement can be carried out through a simple gesture. We should always give children the assurance that they can do it. For teaching to take place, both teachers and students need encouragement. Learning can take place if mistakes are allowed.

Miss Diana Chan:
We need to recognize that children, being children, make many mistakes. The process of learning is much more important compared to the outcome.

Reflections on Chapter 2

Besides harnessing the power of imagination and creative thinking, we learn that the narrator's loneliness at the beginning of Chapter 2 shows how important relationships with others are. This isolation moment allows him to indulge in the most fulfilling relationship of his life.He is able to embrace the prince and the lessons his new friend has to offer.Hence,we should all learn to open our mind to all possibilities life has to offer. We are what we believe.

Reflections of Chapter 2

We must live to the imagination. It is a great gift to imagine as it adds live and color to our life. At school level, we should communicate to the pupils' level to prevent misinterpretation. This actually applies to everybody we deal with. We should live harmoniously in order to live happily ever after.

Reflections on Chapter 2

After reading the chapter 2, we have realised that children need to be encouraged and appreciated for their efforts. Motivation is also a key factor in this aspect.

Its ironic that in this story, the pilot got impatient when the little prince asked him to draw. However, as a young kid, he was discouraged by his teacher of his aspirations to be an artist.

The pilot demonstrates creative thinking (out of the box) by drawing the sheep in the box. We must encourage our pupils to adopt this thinking strategy too.

Chapter 2

In this chapter, it reinforces the power of drawings and the importance of imagination. Reader has to use his own imagination to grasp the real story. We should think out of the box. This chapter shows that adults and children have different perception.
Adult's perspective : unimaginative, overly pragmatic and dull
Child's perspective: creative and imaginative
The author was isolated and away from corrupting influence of grown up world.
Constant questioning shows that we cannot hope to have answers simply handed to us.

kids...

i guess kids and adults hold very much differing views about life. Sometimes, they see much more through theri innocent eyes as they aren't as caught up with life as we are :)

Chapter 1

What do you see in the above pictures?

How do you translate these pictures as adults?

How does the child in the book view the picture?

Any distinct differing views of the picture that you have?

How do children or adults view the world?

What are our main differences in perceiving things we see?

How can we understand and respect these differences? Any other views?

The questions above are just some guidelines for our comments for Chapter 1 where we look at things differently from a child's perspective.

So people....

.....lets get rolling!!!

The Little Prince

Hi JPS Educators of Love!

Remember the book, 'The Little Prince'?

Well, the book might be thin and the story might be short and simple to some. To others, it could be otherwise.

However, there are lots of learning points and some key takeaways from the book that could be applied or reflected in our teaching and learning journey in JPS or even in our wonderful personal life!!!

So, JPS Educators of Love, lets get the ball rolling!!!!!

Here are some burning questions that could guide you through.....

What do you think the book is about? (Just by looking at the illustration and tittle of the book)

Is the book childish?

Is it suitable for adult?

Why, in the first place, the book was given to us?

Was the book given to us for a purpose or it was just a gift from one of our vendors?

Why? Why? Why?

Any other sincere or creative comments about the book are welcome!!
